FAQ's
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to recover from toenail surgery?
Most patients recover from toenail surgery within 2 to 4 weeks, though full healing may take longer depending on the individual and whether a partial or full nail removal was performed.
Will I be able to walk after nail surgery?
Yes. Most patients can walk immediately after surgery, although it’s advised to limit pressure on the toe for the first 24–48 hours. Wear wide, soft shoes and avoid strenuous activity.
Can I drive after ingrown toenail surgery?
You should avoid driving on the day of surgery, especially if your right foot is treated. Numbness from the local anaesthetic can affect pedal control. Arrange for transport if possible.
How painful is toenail surgery?
Most patients report no pain during the procedure due to local anaesthetic. After surgery, there may be mild soreness or throbbing, which is usually manageable with paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Will the ingrown toenail grow back after surgery?
If phenol (a chemical that stops nail regrowth) is used during the procedure, the chance of recurrence is very low, less than 5%.
